The Celts

In History we have been learning about the Celts. Here is some information that might help when researching our projects about 'The Celts'.
Where did the Celts come from?
The Celts came from Europe.
What year did the Celts come to Britain and Ireland?
The Celts ruled in Britain and Ireland from 750BC to 43 AD. This was during the Iron Age.
What were their houses like?
They lived in round huts made from mud, straw and wood. This was called Wattle and Daub. They lit a fire in the middle of the hut. There were no windows in the hut to keep the heat in. The lived in three different types of forts; Hill Forts; these were forts built on top of hills for extra security e.g. The Hill of Tara, Ring Forts; these forts were surrounded by a trench of water for extra defence; and Promontary Forts; these forts were built on the side of a cliff e.g. Dún Aenghus.
Crannógs were houses built in the middle of a lake. Due to constant battles between Celtic Tribes, houses were built with defence being the main priority.
What clothes did The Celts wear?
The Celts loved brightly coloured clothes. They wore woollen clothing which they dyed with natural dyes. They used the juice from berries and plants, and wove the wool using a loom. They used metal or bone needles to sew pieces together. The women wore skirts or dresses to the floor, with a cloak pinned with a brooch. The men wore T-shaped tunics with a belt and trousers. The Tara Brooch is a famous brooch from the Celtic era.
What were Celtic Tribes?
Celts were part of tribes (different groups), and each tribe had their own king or queen. This meant there was a lot of fighting between neighbouring tribes. The three main tribes were; The Gauls, The Britons and The Gaels. Queen Boudicca was a famous tribe Queen. She was mainly known for hating the Romans.
What religion did the Celts practice?
The Celts believed in over 300 gods and goddesses. They made animal sacrifices to the gods, which meant they killed animals as a gift to the gods. They would throw weapons into rivers and lakes to please the gods, and bring good luck.
Druids were the Celtic priests. They could tell the future by studying nature. They used the stars for guidance and made links between the natural world and the next life.
Celts believed there was a life after death so they were buried with their possessions as they believed they could take them with them.
What food did the Celts eat?
The Celts were mainly farmers. They grew corn, gathered berries, nuts, plants and hunted animals. They ate deer, bear, wild boar and fish. They collected honey and eggs. They kept cows, pigs, goats and sheep. A farmer had to be ready to defend his land and fight when he had to!
